Morhiss mound

Victoria Advocate 1932
The largest skull found in Morhiss Mound, Texas
Victoria Advocate July 17, 1932:
"Huge Skull Found
SKELETON OF GIANT
The bones of one of the skeletons found by University of Texas crew exploring the Morhiss mound below Victoria showed that its processor had, in life, been a very large man - far above the average size".

Morhiss Mound is situated in the southern Texas not far from Victoria; overlooking the lower Guadalupe River. Archaeologist William A. Duffen and a team of 30-40 WPA-paid workers did the latest excavations 1938-1940.
Over 200 burials were documented but it seems like the sensational finding of the largest human skull totally seem to have been forgotten.
Several articles in the newspapers even shows pictures of the skull and explain that it must have belonged to the man that was far above the average size - a giant.
Beach Giant's skull
San Antonio Express 1940:
San Antonio Express 1940:
"Beach Giant Skull Unearthed By WPA Workers Near Victoria
Believed to Be Largest Ever Found in World; Normal Head Also Found
That Texas “had a giant in the beach” in the long ago appears probable from the large skull recently unearthed on a mound in Victoria County, believed to be the largest human skull ever found in the United Estates and probably in the world. Twice the size of the skull of a normal man, the fragments were dug up by W. Duffen, archeologist who is excavating the mound in Victoria County under a WPA project sponsored by the University of Texas. In the same mound and at the same level, a normal sized skull was found. The peices taken from the mound were reconstructed in the WPA laboratory under the supervision of physical anthopologists."

They also found fossilized bones of extinct animals in the lower layers of the mound, like the molar of a juvenile mammoth.
Carolyn Spock who is the Head of Records at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory writes in an email to me: "The particular specimen that you ask about, the large skull found at the Morhiss site in 1939, is noted in our paperwork as missing from the collection (and has been for some time, not appearing in inventories undertaken since the collection arrived at TARL)."
She also refers to what physical anthropologist Marcus S. Goldstein wrote: "A couple of unusual crania were unearthed at Morhiss Mound in Victoria County. One of these, although much mended and its base quite warped, is nevertheless obviously a skull of extraordinary size, in many respects larger than any yet reported. The bones of this individual do not indicate excessive stature, but they are remarkably robust and plainly point to a very muscular man."
So the skull was real but as it is all to common; the records shows nothing!

One more side note, I have contacted an editor and head of the museum in Seymour, Texas. They each had no clue about these articles. The only response I received from any educational organization was from the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory. They also did not know anything about these articles. It amazes me how complete the Smithsonian coverup has been in the US. The coverup must have also been worldwide.

Mr. Jacques,
Sir, my name is Kerri Wilhelm and I am the individual at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory responsible for the curation of the Human Osteology Collection. Susan Dial passed on your request to me to research. I’ve worked here over the course of several years and am quite familiar with the human osteology collections and their associated files. To date, I have not come across any records or archives or papers otherwise related to the history of the various parts of the collection which indicate the presence of human skeletal remains described as being those belonging to a ‘giant.’ If the “Victoria skull” had ever been “recorded in UT records and verified” it would have been at a time before TARL existed; perhaps either at one of the museums or in the anthropology department. Nor do we possess records of any “Texas discoveries” as would relate to your topic.
I’m sorry that we couldn’t be any assistance to you in your research and wish you luck in your search.
Sincerely,
Kerri Wilhelm

I have also found the following about the skull in the book "The Ancient Giants Who Ruled America" by Richard Dewhurst:
Dr Ales Hrdlicka of the Smithsonian examined it and related discoveries, and in a joint press release it was said that "these finds in Texas are beginning to give weight to the theory that man lived in Texas 40,000 to 45,000 years ago."
A bit strange because in Wikipedia we can read the following:
Hrdlicka became the first scientist to spot and document the theory of human colonization of the American continent from east Asia only some 3,000 years ago. He argued that the Indians migrated across the Bering Strait from Asia, supporting this theory with detailed field research of skeletal remains as well as studies of the people in Mongolia, Tibet, Siberia, Alaska, and Aleutian Islands.

Ozark Giant Dug Up Near Steelville, Missouri
Steelville, Mo. June 11, 1933:

"Poking about in Puckett's Cave in a Meramec River bluff some 10 miles northeast of here, young Harman reached for something white in a hole in the ground and, to his vast amazement came up with a handful of human bones. Soundly startled, the 16 year-old lad put them down and dashed for home. Then, after gathering his courage and some reinforcements, he went back and proceeded to dig on the site of his discovery. From the ancient accumulation of ash and limestone debris he turned up the complete skeleton of an 8 foot giant. The grisly find was brought to Dr. R. C. Parker here and stretched out to its enormous length in a hallway of his office where it has since remained the most startling exhibit Steelville has ever had on public view. People have come from far and near to examine it and fire a broadside of questions at the harassed doctor.
His slenderness, too, must have been accentuated in appearance, at least, by the extremely small size of his head. With all his magnificent stature, this primitive chief, if chief he was, really was something of a pinhead."

Is this picture of the Steelville giant?
Most often the giants are described of having very large skulls, so the Steelville/Ozark giant supposedly found in the Puckett's Cave is very different. There is an image on the internet of what supposedly is the mummy/skeleton of a giant, with a normal sized person standing on each side. The picture seems to be real, not photoshopped, and it looks like it could be from about 1930. I wonder if this can be the Steelville "pinhead"?

At a depth of more than three feet he found the remains of several giant human skeletons including an almost perfect skull which differed in many particulars from a modern specimen. When partly joined the largest skeleton was almost ten feet tall."

The Ozark mountains are on the border between Missouri and Arkansas, so the article about the giant skulls/skeletons found in a cave in Arkansas might be from the Puckett's Cave but there are many caves in this mountain range.

"STRANGE DISCOVERIES IN TEXAS
Gainesville, Texas, April 10. - Several weeks ago curious discoveries were reported near Era, in Cook County. Col. Tally of Dallas, representing an English scientific society, has been there several days prosecuting an investigation. He has just discovered the remains of a giant woman, with a large gold-mounted and ancient-modeled tucking comb beneath her hair. This is in the nature of other discoveries made there several weeks ago by a party from Illinois and led to the investigation by Col. Tally. He says there is something in store for theological students and historians, as well as for the scientific world. The place of the discovery is known as the Clear Creek Catacombs."

Star and Sentinel, August 1, 1915:
"HUMAN SKELETON IS FOUND
Workers Stumble on It While Digging Gravel Near Battle Lake, Minn.
Battle Lake, Minn.-While hauling gravel from the Thore Glende farm northwest of here workmen discovered a huge human skeleton. The jaw bones were in good state of preservation and were of mammoth size. The teeth were intact and about twice the size of the average man's. Some of the teeth looked as though they had been filled with cement, but in all probability were sound at the time of death and the enamel had decayed, leaving the darker colored interior exposed. The jaw was taken to St. Louis by L. D. Johnson, who was present when the skeleton was discovered and possibly experts there can throw some light upon the discovery. Those who saw the remains estimated that when living the man must have been fully eight feet in height."

Action taken: I could not find any farm or people related to the incident so I sent an email to Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Battle Lake.
Result: I have received replies form a married couple related to Thore Glende and living on the Glende farm. They do not know anything about this. Waiting for further reply from Ron Lundquist.

"AN INDIAN TOMB UNEARTHED
BOSTON, MASS., Dec. 20. - An Indian sepulcher has been unearthed on "Fish Marsh", in Saugus. The tomb was about seven feet below the surface and it contained the skeleton of a man of enormous proportions, which crumbled to dust upon exposure to the air. The body was buried in a sitting posture, facing the east. Beside the skeleton were found a pipe, a tomahawk blade an arrow head, an axe and a cylindrical shaped stone. Near the grave an underground passage has been discovered. Excavations are being made for the purpose of exploring the passage. Grave Creek Queen
Grave Creek Queen
Vault, Grave Creek Mound, West Virginia
Charleston Daily Mail, October 22, 1922:
“Skeletons in Mound
One of the most interesting of the five state parks is Mound Park, at Moundsville from which that city derived its name. Probably no other relic of pre-historic origin has attracted as wide study among archaeologists as the Grave Creeks mound which has given up skeletons of the ancients who constructed it. Aside from the mammoth tumulus, itself 69 feet high and 900 feet in circumference, there were originally no fewer than seven mounds situated in the broad plain at the point. None was nearly equal to the one now standing, and the locations of most of the smaller ones are now lost to all excepting a few. Archaeologists investigating the mound some years ago dug out a skeleton said to be that of a female because of the formation of the bones. The skeleton was seven feet four inches tall and the jawbone would easily fit over the face of a man weighing 160 pounds.
That the women of that ancient day were not unlike the woman of today in their liking for finery was evidenced by the articles that were found beside the skeleton of what centuries ago was a “flapper.” Seventeen hundred ivory beads, 500 seashells of an involute species and five copper bracelets were found in the vault. The beads and shells were about the neck and breast of the skeleton while the bracelets were upon the arms. There was also taken from the mound the skeleton of a man eight feet tall. There were no ornaments beside it. These skeletons were sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington."

Catacomb of skeletons, Weldon, Virginia
New York Times, September 8, 1871:
"The workman engaged in opening a way of the projected railroad between Weldon and Garrysburg struck Monday, a about a mile from the former place in a bank beside the river, a catacomb of skeletons, supposed to be those of Indians, of remote age and a lost and forgotten race. The bodies exhumed were of strange and remarkable formation. The skulls were nearly an inch in thickness; the teeth were filed sharp as those of cannibals, the enamel perfectly preserved; the bones were of wonderful length and strength- the femur being as long as the leg of an ordinary man, the stature of the body being probably as great as eight or nine feet. Near their heads were sharp stone arrows, stone mortars, in which their corn was laid, and the bowls of pipes, apparently of soft soap-stone. The teeth of the skeletons are said to be as large as those of horses. One of them has been brought to the city, and presented to an officer of the Petersburg Railroad. The bodies were found closely packed together, laid tier on tier as it seemed. There was no discernable ingress into or egress out of the mound."

Mounds, Crystal Lake, Michigan
Bruce Herald, March 19, 1899
:
"PREHISTORIC MEN Eleven Feet High
The mounds on the south side of Crystal Lake in Montcalm County, Michigan have been opened and a prehistoric race unearthed. One contained five skeletons and the other three. In the first mound was an earthen tablet, five inches long, four wide and a half an inch thick. It was divided into four quarters. On one of them were inscribed queer characters. The skeletons were arranged in the same relative positions, so far as the mound is concerned. In the other mound there was a casket of earthenware, 10- 1/2 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide. The cover bore various inscriptions. The characters found upon the tablet were also prominent upon the casket. Upon opening the casket a copper coin was revealed, together with other types, which the inscription or marks upon the tablet and casket had evidently been made. Some of the bones of the skeletons were well preserved, showing that the dead men must have been persons of huge proportions. The lower jaw is immense. An ordinary jaw bone fits inside with ease. By measurement the distance from the top of the skull to the upper end of the thigh bone of the large skeleton was five feet, five inches. A doctor who was present state that the man must have been eleven feet high. One of the mounds was partially covered by a pine stump, three feet six inches in diameter, and the ground showed no signs of ever having been disturbed. The digging had to be done among the roots, which had a large spread."

"3 Huge Skeletonns Of Humans Found
Tennesee Discovery Made by Fisherman Digging in Indian Mound
Ripley, Tenn., April 23. (AP) - Skeletons of three gigantic men buried by a forgotten race have been unearthed by a fisherman digging in an old Indian mound near here. Tribal finery in which they were interred was recovered intact. One of the skeletons bore ivory beads and a long ivory ornament. The other was decorated with copper beads and designs of bone and mica. Two were found near the surface. Further down the largest of the skeletons was discovered in a sitting position on a carpet of ashes. Pottery, one piece containing the bones of an infant, was found nearby. It was in a fine state of preservation. Indian mounds abound in this section but hitherto none had yielded skeletons the size of those found by the fisherman. He has offered them to the Tennessee Historical Society at Nashville."

However, during the 19th and early 20th centuries newspaper articles like this one were printed in Tennessee and throughout the eastern United States. Those reports include supposed finds of various "lost races" purported to have inhabited the region, including both the skeletons of hominin giants and pygmies (see here). These reports predate the advent of professional, rigorous archaeological scholarship, and none of the supposed examples survive for re-examination by modern physical anthropologists. Although the myth of giants inhabiting the region is intriguing to many people and has a sizable internet following, there is no credible evidence to support this claim."

West Coast Times, November 29 1871
Mass grave, Grand River, Cayuga
West Coast Times, November 29 1871:
"LOST CITY OF GIANTS-LOST CITIES DISCOVERED.
Cayuga, August 21st. On Wednesday last, Rev. Nathaniel Wardel, Messrs Orin Wardell, of Toronto and Daniel Fredenburg, were digging on the farm of the later gentleman, which is on the banks of the Grand River, in the township of Cayuga. When they got to five or six feet below the surface a strange sight met them. Piled in layers, one upon top of the other, some two hundred skeletons of human beings nearly perfect-around the neck of each one being a string of beads. There were also deposited in this pit a number of axes and skinners made of stone. In the jaws of several of the skeletons were large stone pipes, one of which Mr. O. Wardell took with him to Toronto a day or two after this Golgotha was unearthed. These skeletons are those of men of gigantic stature, some of them measuring nine feet, very few of them being less than seven feet. Some of the thigh bones were found to be at least half a foot longer than those at present known and one of the skulls being examined completely covered the head of an ordinary person. These skeletons are supposed to belong to a race of people anterior to the Indians. The pit and its ghastly occupants are now open to the view of any who may wish to make a visit there.

DUNNSVILLE, AUGUST 22.
There is not the slightest doubt that the remains of a lost city are on this farm. At various times within the past years the remains of mud-homes with their chimneys had been found; and there are dozens of pits of a similar kind to that just unearthed, though much smaller, in the place which has been discovered before, though the fact has not been made public hitherto. The remains of a blacksmith shop, containing two tons of charcoal and various implements, were turned up a few months ago. The farm, which consists of 150 acres, has been cultivated for nearly a century and was covered with a thick growth of pine, so that it must have been ages since the remains were deposited there. The skulls of the skeletons are of enormous size and are of all manner of shapes. The teeth of most of them are still in an almost perfect state of preservation, though they soon fall out when exposed to air. Some large shells, supposed to have been used for holding water, which were also found in the pit, were almost petrified. A good deal of excitement exists in the neighbourhood and many visitors call at the farm daily. The skulls and bones of the giants are fast disappearing, being taken away by curiosity hunters. It is the intention of Mr. Fredenburgh to cover the pit very soon. From the appearance of the skulls it would seem that their possessor died a violent death, as many of them were broken and dented. The beads are all of stone and of all sizes and shapes. The pipes are not unlike in shape the cutty pipes and several of them are engraved with dog's heads. They have not lost their virtue of smoking. Some people profess to believe that the locality Fredenburgh Farm was formerly an Indian burial-place but the enormous stature of the skeletons and the fact that pine trees of centuries growth covered the spot, go far to disprove the idea."

"SKELETON FOUND OF SUPER-INDIAN
Discovery of large sized Indian bones by victory gardeners at Departure Bay, three miles north of here, is believed to give support to the legend that a giant tribe inhabited Vancouver Island 300 years ago. The lower jaw, part of the skull and the shin bone of an Indian were unearthed, and preliminary examination suggests that their owner may have been around seven feet tall, weighed more than 400 pounds and was between 70 and 80 years old when he died. It is believed he may have died in battle, as the legend persists that a giant tribe exterminated the Nanaimo Indians 300 years ago at Departure Bay. New York Times, 19 December 1904:
"After a year's visit to the land of the Eskimos, Captain Christian Jensen of the bark Silicon, arrived last night at his home here. A strange tale is told by Captain Jensen of a remarkable race of giants, some of whom visited the Eskimos and Danes at the mining settlement of Arsuk, ten miles from Ivigtut Bay, Greenland. These people had never before been seen even by the Eskimos. They are copper colored and are seven, eight and even nine feet tall. In feature they resemble the American Indian. "These strange people", said Captain Jensen, "represented to the Eskimos a traditional, a most legendary tribe of giants, stories of which had been brought down to them until they regarded the race as mythical, They cannot speak the language of the Eskimos and could only make known by signs that they had been driven from their homes in the interior by great storms and cold weather."

Sigatoka sand dunes, Fiji
From a book:

"In Fiji, I was told by Vasiti Ritova of the Daily Post that during digging in the Sigatoka sand dunes, there was uncovered a forearm as long as the total length of my arm from fingers to shoulder. Then progressively, remains of men, women and children were found, who were giants. Work continued until 1992."

I came across a short passage in a book on the net telling that a local journalist saw giant bones in the Sigatoka sand dunes. Could not find anything further on the net besides that there were found a lot of human bones in the dunes, during archaeological excavations and else. Then I came across a picture of Sepeti "Mata" Matararaba sitting besides what seems to be a giant bone in the dunes (see picture). He is with the Fiji Museum and has participated in more than 135 archaeological fieldtrips throughout the Fiji islands. His work in prehistory archaeology and oral tradition has also earned him the respect and recognition from renowned archaeologist around the world, working in the Pacific.
